Stella's Award-Winning Walnut Bonnie Butter Cake Recipe

1962 County Fair Baking Contest



2/3 Cup Butter                                               

1-3/4 Cups Sugar                                         

2 Eggs                                                            

1-1/4 Teaspoon Vanilla Flavoring              

1/4 Teaspoon Maple Flavoring                 

 3 Cups Sifted Cake Flour

2-1/2 Teaspoons Baking Powder

1 Teaspoon Salt

1-1/4 Cups Milk

1 Cup Chopped Walnuts


Cream together butter, sugar, eggs & flavorings until fluffy. Sift dry ingredients; mix in alternately with milk. Fold in nuts. Grease and flour 3 8-inch layer pans. Bake at 350° F. for 35 to 40 minutes. Frost with Butter Frosting.

Butter Frosting

Cream together 1/2 cup butter and 2 cups powdered sugar. Add 2 egg whites, one at a time, beating after each addition. Add a dash of salt, 1/4 teaspoon maple flavoring, and 2 cups powdered sugar. Beat until frosting holds shape. Decorate with chopped nuts.
